On February 20, we celebrate National Pet Love Day, a day to embrace a special trait that makes us human: love for our pets! Many things set humans apart from the rest of the animal kingdom, but one of the most unusual behaviours is our long-standing tendency to keep other animals as pets. Although a handful of other animals have been observed keeping pets – the Koko gorilla and its cats are a well-known example – we are the only species in which this is common. Gallup reports that sixty percent of Americans own pets. It makes sense to commemorate something so important to so many people, so on February 20, we celebrate our pets with “Love Your Pet Day”!
